Brett Murray - The Spear

The theme of Art & Politics: Resistance Art is still relevant, especially regarding the role of censorship and the arts.

Remember - the theme is about images of POWER & RESISTANCE - not about morality and policing.

Murray based his painting on a historic poster of Lenin - a Russian dictator. Strangely enough - Zapiro then based his later satirical commentary on Murray's work - and so commentary carries on .......

Zapiro comment on Murray's work

How could you make an artwork go 'viral' to avoid censorship?
Read the arguments around this issue of censorship, and study the work itself.

1. On both sides ........
2. An argument against ........
3. Another interesting article .........
4. And another about freedom of the media ........

Argue your point of view by creating an infographic about this work. Don't forget to consider the artistic merits by analysing the elements, principles and technical aspects.
Look at other Brett Murray works that reference political cartoons.

Infographics

'Infographics' are a visual (graphic) depiction of information  about any subject. They are really great for visual learners who don't work particularly well with words. Plus they are fun to do!

They can be done on an A3 sheet of paper, or can be done digitally.
The one below is done by Megan Campbell, and is a 10-mark analytical summary of a painting by Penny Siopis.

It is done in a free programme called Prezi, and zooms into text chunks so that they can be read. You can evaluate your own infographic, or ask your teacher to evaluate it for you - look at the link below.

Faber (working with StrangeLove) examines the concept of 'grafting' a bride into a new country.
She calls the exhibition 'Dis-Location / Re-Location'.
This still happens today with 'mail-order' brides.

Hair is difficult to cut out using the Pen tool.
