Don't forget to use some of these for your Final Theory Exam (see RE-LINK for the structure of this). (RE-SHARE)
In the Exam is another question (12 marks) which allows you to take other examples (from YOUR research - not mine!) and discuss them.

Grade 11 practical exam

This 6 hour exam will be based on the theme 'Our Land' that the Grade 12s have just completed for their finals.

You will take your own photos of landscapes and the human face or head, and edit these in Photoshop or Pixlr Editor. Create many of these as you think about your interpretation of the theme.
You will choose ONE of these and further interpret it as a 6 hour drawing. You may use coloured drawing media or create a mixed media drawing.

Your rubric is based on the national LO2 rubric:

Use of materials and technique [10]
Use of formal elements and principles [10]
Creativity; originality; innovation [10]
Interpretation of your digital photos as an artwork [10]
Completion and presentation [10]

Done by Mrs Moore in Photoshop
Curves adjustment layer on the desaturated head layer; difference blending mode on the head layer; cut out filter to simplify the landscape.
I would then interpret this on 240g El Toro or Mylar with dilute coloured acrylic inks, a pen and brushes.

Gr10 2-D in art history

Earlier this year we looked at the history of the creation of illusions of form and space in Art. OLD LINK
But art has been 2-Dimensional for most of our prehistoric and recorded history. Have a look at this new presentation for an overview. Follow the links in the presentation for a more in depth look at the examples I have chosen.

Getting started with Scratch animation

Get the download from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)  HERE
Follow the instructions and don't forget to work through the tutorials as well.
Join the Scratch group at MIT for more support.

Some hints for beginners:
Just animate one object ('sprite') by making it move around ('motion') or making it change its appearance ('costume')
See the 'Animate your name' tutorial ......

Pay special attention on how to 'share' your animation with me at studio@dghs.co.za

Inserting a video - training

Inserting videos in your blog
Videos are normally already hosted on the cloud – e.g. YouTube
You will therefore basically LINK them to your content on your GAFE Drive and to your blog

If you want to play a video in class, then download it first  and keep it on the DGHS server – SA bandwidth is terrible!

This looks like an actual video - but it's not - it's a link to a video. Your learners can view it at home or anywhere that has good Internet download speed. They like to download it at night (cheaper rates; less busy) and watch it the next day.
This particular video is only 21MB, so plays instantly. Check your video size before using.

Theory revision - Grade 12 Visual Literacy

For my Grade 12s .............
This post has been updated for you to use while studying at home.

Dunywa

Magwood -Fraser

Let's concentrate on our collection of chosen artworks that are good examples for the FIVE themes we have studied in class.
Some examples can be used in either of two themes BUT you must explain in your essay why the example is relevant to that theme - i.e. focus on that theme.

Dust off your infographics, grab some Post-it notes - we're going for 100% for your upcoming Final theory exam!

Optional:

Order your CD collection or put the collection on your flash. However, your infographics should already have all the content you need.

  1. Look at the Exemplar and its Memo on the DoE website - it gives you valuable information. This site works for all your subjects - not just Visual Arts.......LINK
  2. Look at the Trials paper Memo - this will also be invaluable for final revision. You also have this link as a QR code on your Trials question paper.......LINK

Ceramics for Grade 10s

For my Grade 10s.......

Working in 3 dimensions - in real space and with actual 3-D form - is very important in Art.

When you start, it is essential that you try baby steps first so that you don't get frustrated. Clay has a mind of its own and you need to learn to work WITH this material and not try to impose your will on it - you will not succeed!

We will start off looking at CLOSED forms with an animal theme.

Follow this LINK for details.

Checklist:
Have you done and documented Activity 1 on Google Slides?
Have you shared this with me?
Have you researched African ceramic animals and added this to your Slides?
Have you drawn your idea showing 3-D semi-closed form?

This article also poses questions about colonial history in Africa.

Do you think it is offensive? Is it better to make artworks from a 'Post-democratic' viewpoint?

Plagiarism & Transformation

This is found in the 2014 Grade 12 Final Exam paper!

How can you 'transform' visual source material from the media if you need to use it?

Some ideas......
  • Use the visual reference as an idea & take your own photo with a model
  • Combine images as your own collage (Photoshop or scissors & glue)
  • Re-draw using imaginative extras from other visual sources
Can you think of any other ways to share?

Women through the ages - an introduction to Gender Issues

For my grade 11s ....Women through the ages - an introduction to Gender Issues

        ... some mystery women!

Woman as an object  - ‘objectification’ of women

This kind of objectification gives us a clue about how women were regarded at various times and in various cultures.

Some types of objectification ….

  • Fertility & reproduction – finding/hunting down a mate
  • Nurturing and ordering – creating stability from chaos
  • Bound by servitude - to "women's work"
  • Predatory women - women as threat/competition
  • Woman as 'priestess' - spiritual figure
  • The Wise Woman archetype - counsellor & sage
  • Woman as 'scapegoat' - it's your fault that ......
  • Others? Discuss this in class ......

Hint:
Look for examples from these cultures:-
Goddess figures – non-Christian traditions like Paleolithic, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Indus River, San, etc.

Later goddesses – Byzantine, Medieval, Renaissance

Then – a big change (about 1600)…
Women from these times …
Baroque, Rococo,  Neo-classicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, German Expressionism, etc

And finally ...
our own times!

Activity: Now create a digital presentation showing examples of the above.
  • Referenced image (at least 10 from different periods)
  • Name of artist, title of work, date & 'movement'
(Gender of artist and/or patron?) [20 marks for recording this info]
  • 3 stylistic characteristics for each work. [20 marks for this info - if accurate]
  • Note on the possible perception of women with each image (- the artist's 'intention')[10 marks for opinions on these]

[This should be handed in OR ‘shared’ with your teacher. All images must be referenced. (Cheaper to do this digitally!)]

Dunywa - New Media and Gender Stereotypes

But is this Art?
This question is often overheard in a gallery in South Africa showing New Media like Performance Art. It is however not a new medium overseas and we can look at examples like Joseph Beuys' How to explain Pictures to a Dead Hare 1965 (link) to see this.
Now use your analysis skills to answer this perplexing question about Dunywa's work.

Look at the ARTICLE, and then create your own info-graphic.
Ask yourself ..... "Would this piece have been as effective as a painting or a sculpture?"

This piece by Dunywa could work for a number of Matric themes viz:

  • Post-democratic Identity - issues of ethnicity
  • Gender Issues - gender stereotyping
  • New Media - Performance Art
We will develop a chart for purposes of revision so you can decide which pieces to use for which themes.

Link to some presentation questions

Here is a link to an on-line worksheet you may prefer to do instead of an info-graphic.
