Analysis - ceramics & jewellery

For the Grade 10s........

Try to write a formal analysis of these two works .......

Pot from Rorke's Drift

Artist's block from Chris de Beer

Stencils

A clever idea for all sorts of repetition in design and visual art ..... He uses a jeweller's saw and a 'sandwich' of many pieces of paper or plastic.

Stereotypes - Arnott

For the Grade 9s ......
Thanks to Miss Bansi for this information.

Bruce
Arnott

Bruce Arnott was a Professor in the Department of Fine Art, where he taught sculpture. He is a Life Fellow of the University of Cape Town.
Bruce Arnott is also a professional sculptor who works mainly in bronze. He is represented in public collections in South Africa.

This is one of his works titled ‘Exile’.
What message do you think he is trying to send?

 Exile

The Citizen

The Citizen is a brilliant satire on the cigar-smoking businessman dressed in morning coat, striding out to work, cane in hand and Financial Times tucked under the arm.

What could the following mean? What is the citizen's 'type'?

The coat & hat
The stance, body language, form of the body
Cigar
Newspaper rolled up
Walking cane

Stereotypes by Disney

You have got to love the Disney designers for putting their collective feet into stereotypical bias! Have a look and comment on what YOU think. This would make an interesting question for an Exam paper.

Ceramic sculpture

Christie Brown works with a Surform  tool (like a grater) on polystyrene foam - then translates this into clay.

I wonder about the mess in the studio though! Maybe on the veranda in a box like the polyurethane foam? Its certainly cheaper than PU foam. (both from Sagex - Pinetown)

Jewellery - wire wrapping

For my Grade 10s ..........
What objects do you find 'healing'?
Could you wrap them in wire so that they become an important part of your jewellery theme - 'Art as Healing'?

Wire Wrapped Purple Mohave Turquoise Jewelry Set

Mattie and Phil are the husband and wife team behind Gaddabout Rock on Etsy who stumbled upon rock hounding years ago.  They were on a hike and came across what they thought was an interesting stone. Mattie said, "We took it home; my husband used the lapidary at our RV park to cut and polish it, then we were hooked!"

Art & Politics - Mabulu

Following on from my post about Brett Murray and The Spear ......

You Magazine had an interesting article (6th September 2012) about another satirical artist who is known for his social activism - Ayanda Mabulu from Cape Town. And guess who he satirizes???

Ayanda Mabulu (You Magazine)

This artist could also be used for the theme on Art & Politics, but the focus should be on the actual painting, rather than purely about the political discourse.

Ceramics

A really inspirational site for ceramics! The work has an organic look to it, although animals aren't specifically referenced.

Willie Bester - Art & Politics

Bester expresses his intentions ........

"What I try to get behind is why it is so difficult for people to change from their old ways. It hasn't worked out the way I imagined. People who thought they were superior before haven't really changed. I try to find out through studying history what gives people the right to think that way. I try to find a solution, not to be disappointed, to reach an understanding." (ArtThrob)

Critics have found his work to be 'preachy' and 'tritely literal' - what do you think?
You may use the link below for a reminder of our discussion in class.

Create an infographic on Bester's work below.
Please use your usual rubric to plan this.

Dunywa - New Media and Stereotypes

But is this Art?
This question is often overheard in a gallery showing New Media like Performance Art.
Use your analysis skills to answer this.

Look at the presentation if necessary. Remember - my opinions are not 'right' - they are just mine!

Colour and clay

It's possible to create illusions of form with your pencil crayons. Look at this pencil crayon drawing I did of Rebecca Matibe's pot.

Remember - work on the highlights first with white / yellow ochre. The darks of the form shadow can have some blue in them - this often darkens the colour value. I intensified the terracotta colour with bright orange and vermilion.

Terrence Bray at KZNSA - Fashion

For those of you who are interested in Fashion Design ...................tonight is the opening.

reminder - exhibition opening - where we live - tuesday 21 august - 6pm

KZNSA Main Gallery

This new exhibition is a collaboration between artist Jeannie Kinsler and the renowned Durban fashion designer Terrence Bray. A serendipitous meeting with Terrence led to the collaboration, which resulted in Terrence using paintings on fabric and as inspiration for his Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Jeannie was in turn inspired by his vision and creative energy - and by seeing her work moving through fabric on bodies - to produce a new series of paintings. While her work is widely associated with images of the female form, the human head and still life – this new body of work further explores the human form fragmented by light, shadow, fabric and movement.
The opening will showcase the official Durban launch of the Spring/Summer 2012 collection by Terrence Bray - a couture-style version of Bray’s new ready-to-wear range – a highly styled high-fashion presentation of 10 looks from the collection – and an opportunity to view this fusion of fashion and art.

Stereotypes - 'The Third Force'

I was listening to the news of the 'Marikana Massacre' this morning and wondering who the infamous 'Third Force' was this time!

Third force link

"During this time, the African National Congress Youth League echoes [the Congress of SA Trade Unions'] call for workers to exercise maximum discipline and restraint in the face of faceless and nameless provocation."

News24 link

Is this an age-old stereotype that Humans use to put blame on the 'Scapegoat'?
"It's not OUR conflict - we can't resolve it - it's somebody else's fault/responsibility"

Grade 9s - we will discuss this in class as part of our Conflict Resolution investigation, and you can also comment here by signing in as yourself.

Stereotypes - Hanson

Hanson - Shopper 1970

Create an A3 infographic on ONE of Hanson's works.
This task is worth 10 credits.
Make sure you include the following:-

  1. The name and date of the artwork
  2. A short explanation of the artist's intention
  3. A consideration of the possible stereotype.
(Hint: What is the 'American Dream'?)
  4. A short summary of the materials and techniques used in the work.
  5. Don't forget the design impact of your infographic.
