Drawing for Term 2

For my Grade 11s and 12s ............
Drawing is an important aspect of an academic course in our subject.

Reason 1: The National NCS rubric allocates 15 of 50 marks (LO1) for drawing activities

Reason 2: Tertiary institutes require certain drawings for their portfolios. These should be collected slowly and methodically in your source books.

You will be required to complete ONE of these portfolio drawings for your MTDTD project for 15 marks.
Consider the solution you have come up with for this project, and choose one of the drawing categories that fits in with it.

b) Drawings:

You are required to submit 4 original A3 size (420mm x 297mm) drawings on paper in at least two different media (such as pencil, charcoal, pen or brush). These drawings must be from life and NOT from photographs nor traced, and must include the following:

- self-portrait
- still life
- figure or animal study
- architectural or landscape study

All work must be clearly labeled (printed) on the reverse side of the drawing and packed flat between two sheets of card in standard C3 size envelope (458mm x 324mm) available from any stationers or Postnet.

3-D Beautiful people for Grade 9s Term 2

Activity 1:

Use your knowledge of textures, forms and tones to draw your own 3-D person. Think of objects you can collect that will give it a character.

Criteria - for 10 marks

'Beautiful' qualities - does it look beautiful? [5]

Illusions of form & texture - are they convincing?[5]

Activity 2:

Collect a variety of your own materials (recycled!) and construct a beautiful person. Try and establish a character for this person.
Design challenge .... get your character to fit inside a 1litre yoghurt tub for protection!

Criteria  - for 25 marks

Technical skill - no sticky tape, glue or staples!          [5]

Little Bird origami

For my Grade 10s ......
We will make an origami bird from a flat (2-D) piece of paper. Notice that we have made a 3-D form from a 2-D object. Now - in an ironic twisted way - we are going to draw the 3-D paper bird on a flat 2-D piece of paper to create an ILLUSION of 3-D form.

Arrange your bird so that the natural (or lamp) light falls on it in a way that emphasizes its 3-D nature. Twist and turn the bird until you are happy with this. You might want to take a photo of this but remember to switch off the flash as that frontal harsh light flattens form.
Another thing that flattens form is OUTLINE.

Step 1: Use a soft pencil to lightly sketch the layout
Step 2: Use 2B, 4B pencils to put in the tones into the figure AND the ground at the same time. Don't do the figure first and then the ground - it's hard to adjust the tonal values afterwards.
