Grade 10 List Poems

For the new Grade 10s .......

(Thanks to the Adobe Youth Voices Program)

List Poem writing stimulates creative thinking about identity and issues you might care about. In this way we can get to know you.
Follow the activity steps below.

Save ALL your rough work for your Term 1 process poster which you will also display!

1. People say I ____________________

2. Sometimes I struggle to ____________________

3. I wish I could speak to/for ___________________

4. I create _________________________

5. My community is ______________________

6. We can change _________________________

The List Poem Activity creates an opportunity for young people to represent the lines from their list poems visually and metaphorically using magazine cut-outs, photos and drawings within six storyboard frames. This introduces  the storyboard concept and primes the pump for metaphorical thinking.
Look at the link below for photographic tips.

Use ANY collage cut-outs and drawing/ painting/ sculpture techniques that you would like...... ask for help if you need it!
Remember - still beginner steps - don't get too complicated. What can you do already????

Grade 9 - Basic armatures

For the Grade 9s .....

An armature is like the skeleton of a sculpture. Our simple test armature is made of .5mm baling wire wrapped around a crumpled and torn piece of old printed paper (from the recycling bin).
Like a skeleton - it must be able to bend in space and retain its 'pose'.

Photo of Mrs Moore's armature

We then need to draw it on a flat piece of paper so that it looks like it is 3-D. This is called an illusion of 3-dimensions.
Work in 2 steps......

  1. Create the illusion of a wrapped cylinder using  imaginary lighting from the left. Form shadows will then be on the right.
  2. Create an illusion of space by sketching in a 'corner' behind the form of the armature.
  3. The armature and the drawing will be for your term assessment.
  4. Practice makes perfect!

Term 1
Armature = 10 marks
Spatial drawing of armature = 10 marks
Expressive wire figure = 25 marks

Mrs Moore was messing around in class! Here is her drawing of an odd looking armature in a shoe box. A flower?

Grade 10 .... 3-D illusionism in Art History

Willendorf Venus, Austria,
c.39,OOO - 28,OOO BCE
Limestone carving; Height (12cm)

For the Grade 10s......

This post should be used together with the DVD -'How Art Made the World - More Human than Human' (BBC). If you missed this, then borrow it from your teacher or download it. LINK to website can be found here....

A LINK to the DVD (hopefully not blocked) can also be found on YouTube.

Just as we have been exploring 3-D illusionism in our practical work, so we will look at how other artists have worked both in real 3-dimensions and with the illusion of 3-dimensions during the long history of art.

Grade 10 Ceramics 2015

For the Grade 10s .....

This term you will be creating a small wall hanging using clay relief tiles. The topic will be ...... 'Africa re-visited'.
The supports for the wall hanging will be provided as a design constraint. Each panel measures 24 cm x 24 cm and you may use as few (or as many) as you need.

Start your process work by brainstorming your ideas with little sketches.

Leanne Vincent
  • Research the work of other ceramic artists.
  • Find out how to make small shaped tiles.
You could 'model' plastic clay OR 'carve' leather hard clay.
  • Take photos of your environment that you could use.
  • Make paper patterns for your tiles. Move them around to create a composition.
  • Make some coloured drawings to show the glazes you could use. Your teacher will demonstrate a new oil pastel technique. LINK to the kamKame oil pastel workshop.
  • Investigate shapes; patterns; textures; colours; contrasts; focal areas;
  • All this process work will be collected into your Ceramics Sourcebook - worth 50 marks.
