Logo competition

NATIONAL GIRLS’ SCHOOL FESTIVAL - 2016


Calling all our budding DGHS artists! 

We are so excited to be hosting next years’ event and we invite you to get your creative juices flowing starting over the next two long weekends and design for us a logo that can represent DGHS for the 2016 National All Girls’ School Festival. 

We are thinking of the theme “On the crest of the wave”, we would love all the codes that we are offering Cultural (Art, Debating, Drama, Public Speaking and Vocal Ensemble) and Sport (Chess, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Touch Rugby, Squash) to be represented in some way, maybe on a surf board? 

We will be offering a prize for the best logo. You can drop off your ideas in Mrs Phipps' office or email her on phipps@dghs.co.za
Deadline will be end of May 2015.

Bullets and Sweets - Grade 11 theory question

For my Grade 11s .....
Here is the question we were doing when we had our blackout. It's from a past paper.

Study the visual source provided and discuss how this work reflected life in townships during the struggle against apartheid (1 page = 10 marks).


In your answer refer to the following:
  • The choice of images
  • The different expressions on the people's faces
  • Composition
  • What, according to your opinion, is the role of this artwork today?
  • How do you think that this artwork reflects the problems and horror of township life during the struggle years? Interpret it and substantiate your arguments. (10)

Woolworths T-shirt competition

Woolworths are launching a range of bionic yarn T-shirts in collaboration with Pharrell Williams. Bionic yarn is a thread made from the tons of plastic that pollutes the planet’s oceans. As a designer, you know that your work can change the world. That is why we are turning to South Africa’s young designers to create impactful designs that will make a difference. The winning designs will raise awareness about the issues that affect our planet and a sustainable future for generations to come.


Please note the following :


  • To enter you would need to go to the Woolworths Website and submit your entry online only.
  • Entrants must be between the ages of 15 and 25. Any entrant under the age of 18 must have the consent of a parent or guardian to enter the competition.
  • In order to qualify, designs must be submitted to the following email address: areyouwithus@woolworths.co.za  by no later than midday on Friday, 15 May 2015. Submissions received after this, will not be considered.

Grade 9 figure sculpture


You have tried making a basic wire and paper armature and you have also drawn an imaginary wire figure. Now you will actually make the figure. This skill is a fundamental one for sculptors and has many applications for a career. (See LINK for these lessons)
Your figure will change as you work on it - it could end up rather different from your original drawing.

Look at this presentation to get some more ideas about how to make a wire figure. LINK
Here is another presentation by Mrs Sturgess that may give you some guidelines. LINK
Use paper as well as wire to get the form you want, as it is very expensive to use aluminium wire as shown in most of the video tutorials. Look at your drawing for guidance.

  • You may distort the figure for emotional impact!
  • Remember to use evocative body language /pose.
  • Your figure must fit in a 1 litre box or tub.


If you want to work in proportion - then borrow a sized ‘skeleton’ print from your teacher to work from.

Woolworths 'Changing Perspectives' Design Challenge 2015

For the Grade 11s and 12s .......

By combining SMART, INNOVATIVE THINKING WITH BOLD EXCITING DESIGN, Woolworths invites you to find brilliantly creative solutions to real-world ISSUES that are important to you.

You will work with either TOPIC 1 or TOPIC 2



We will be using our GAFE Classroom platform for Stage 1.
  

Log on with your GAFE username and password and open your Classroom app. Your Woolworths 'class' and assignment will be found there and you can CREATE your Google Slides presentation from there. Your instructions and resources will also be found there.You can also join by adding the code ... oafyke ...

SUMMARY of Stage 1

  • Notice the due date for Stage 1 is the 24 April 2015.
  • Stage 1 consists of  two activities - Your Pitch and your Business Case Study.
    The templates for these are in your Classroom resources.
  • You will create ONE presentation containing both of these activities.
  • These are just the initial ideas so don't get too complicated - you only have 2 weeks for both!
  • You may work as a team of no more than 3 members. This may speed up your process work! The team may submit ONE collaborative presentation in Google Slides using the Classroom platform.
After submitting your presentation of Stage1, you will evaluate it yourself using this LINK. This self-evaluation (25 marks) will provide the basis for 50% of your LO1 Sourcebook for this term. 
The other 50% of your sourcebook (25 marks) will be a collection of  your experiments and more drawings/own photos. This will be due on the 11 May and you will also evaluate this using this LINK.

After that you will work on your LO2 - the final product/piece/campaign. (50 marks) 
This MUST be handed in on the last day of term (or before). You may not work on it during the holidays.
You will evaluate this next term for Term 3 marks.
Your Practical Exam will be for another 50 marks for Term 2, and will be based on either your Term1 or Term2 sourcebooks.

Elements of Art - Shape & Form

For the Grade 10s .........

Now that we have finished our introductory List Poem, we will start making our own 'textbooks' where we research, experiment and construct our own knowledge. We call these books - 'source-books'- and each one is unique.

Here is a presentation LINK to guide you through this first topic.
Normally a source-book (which is Learning Outcome 1) will take 4 weeks and be worth 50 marks. However, we will include small art works (Learning Outcome 2) INTO our source-books in grade 10, so it will be worth 100 marks and will be for your Term2 assessment.
