UK Art students - BBC

Sometimes we think we are working in isolation down here at the bottom of Africa. It's good to have a look at other students' sourcebooks and work (from the UK) - thanks to the BBC for running this site.

Dunywa - New Media and Stereotypes

But is this Art?
This question is often overheard in a gallery showing New Media like Performance Art.
Use your analysis skills to answer this.

Look at the presentation if necessary. Remember - my opinions are not 'right' - they are just mine!

Colour and clay

It's possible to create illusions of form with your pencil crayons. Look at this pencil crayon drawing I did of Rebecca Matibe's pot.

Remember - work on the highlights first with white / yellow ochre. The darks of the form shadow can have some blue in them - this often darkens the colour value. I intensified the terracotta colour with bright orange and vermilion.

Terrence Bray at KZNSA - Fashion

For those of you who are interested in Fashion Design ...................tonight is the opening.

reminder - exhibition opening - where we live - tuesday 21 august - 6pm

KZNSA Main Gallery

This new exhibition is a collaboration between artist Jeannie Kinsler and the renowned Durban fashion designer Terrence Bray. A serendipitous meeting with Terrence led to the collaboration, which resulted in Terrence using paintings on fabric and as inspiration for his Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Jeannie was in turn inspired by his vision and creative energy - and by seeing her work moving through fabric on bodies - to produce a new series of paintings. While her work is widely associated with images of the female form, the human head and still life – this new body of work further explores the human form fragmented by light, shadow, fabric and movement.
The opening will showcase the official Durban launch of the Spring/Summer 2012 collection by Terrence Bray - a couture-style version of Bray’s new ready-to-wear range – a highly styled high-fashion presentation of 10 looks from the collection – and an opportunity to view this fusion of fashion and art.

Stereotypes - 'The Third Force'

I was listening to the news of the 'Marikana Massacre' this morning and wondering who the infamous 'Third Force' was this time!

Third force link

"During this time, the African National Congress Youth League echoes [the Congress of SA Trade Unions'] call for workers to exercise maximum discipline and restraint in the face of faceless and nameless provocation."

News24 link

Is this an age-old stereotype that Humans use to put blame on the 'Scapegoat'?
"It's not OUR conflict - we can't resolve it - it's somebody else's fault/responsibility"

Grade 9s - we will discuss this in class as part of our Conflict Resolution investigation, and you can also comment here by signing in as yourself.

Prezi question - stereotypes

I had to find out if a Prezi infographic can have sound added to it!
Apparently YES, but it sounds quite complicated.
Let me know if you manage it by sharing your Prezi with me.

Stereotypes - Hanson

Watch this video on Hyper-realistic sculptors

Hanson - Shopper 1970

Create an A3 infographic on ONE of Hanson's works.
This task is worth 10 credits.
Make sure you include the following:-

  1. The name and date of the artwork
  2. A short explanation of the artist's intention
  3. A consideration of the possible stereotype.
(Hint: What is the 'American Dream'?)
  4. A short summary of the materials and techniques used in the work.
  5. Don't forget the design impact of your infographic.

Nesta Nala infographic

For my Grade 12's ...........
Craft and Applied Art

Nesta Nala holding an uphiso

Have a look as this demo infographic that I have made for you.
I used my Powerpoint as a base and then used Juliet Armstrong's website as well. I found it very interesting and informative.

Thanks as well to the Magwasa family who demonstrated these skills for Prof. Armstrong.

When I assessed the Grade 12 infographics, I found the following to be common problems:-

  • The chunks were too short with little discussion. Try and aim for at least 100 words per infographic (for 10 marks).
  • The chunks were poorly sequenced, and so were confusing to read. Remember - you need to write a coherent essay on this topic for your final.
  • Many of the Grade 12's simply copied and pasted my Powerpoint or another website. Bad news! Please analyse and re-synthesise the information to show your higher order thinking skills.
  • The generic infographic rubric was ignored - not even used as a checklist. Let me give it to you AGAIN.

Deborah Bell - Journey Pots

For my grade 12s.......
Bell's Journey Pots are interesting examples to consider for the theme: 'Craft & Applied Art'.
Journey Pots link

Make an infographic on ONE of these pots - don't forget to look at the rubric below!

Are these pots 'Art', 'Craft', or 'Applied Art'? Discuss this first and then explain your reasoning in FULL sentences. You can do this by posting a comment.(Remember to log in as YOU)

Surrealism - Dali

For my Grade 11s ....

Let's think about the intentions of some of the Surrealists and their followers.

Dali - 1937
Metamorphosis of Narcissus - link
  1. Look at the art work shown here - record the artist, the work title and the date.
  2. What/who influenced THIS work? What was the context - what was going on at the time?
  3. What do you think the artist's intention could have been? Open the link on a new tab to research this - but you must THINK about this.
  4. Discuss Dali's technical skills and their impact on 'reality'.
I found the Tate's site to be very valuable.
Tate link

Dali's poem ....

“When that head splits

When that head bursts

When the head shatters in pieces

It will be the flower,

The new Narcissus,

Gala,

My narcissus.”
