  4. The newest princess by Disney, Sofia the Latino princess but this princess looks just like all the rest, she has fair skin, fair hair and blue eyes. how can she be called a Latino princess if she looks like she is from one of the western European countries.the Latino princess should have dark brow hair, brown eyes and a olive skin, she should look like a Latino not one of Disney's superficial ideas of beauty.

The sculpture by Jane Alexander called "oh yes girl" shows women in a more realistic light than the Disney princess she is losing her hair and her eyelashes and eyebrows are nonexistent which shows the stress women are put under.she has lace stitched to her skin showing how society forces us to do things we may not want to just because everybody else is.Her tired expression shows how she doesn't want to be like everybody else and is tired of it.

  5. Hi Miss Moore! :)
In the society we live in today, if you’re overweight, you’re considered ‘obese’. If you’re skinny you’re considered ‘anorexic’, if you’re pretty then you’re considered ‘fake’. It’s definitely hard to tell what is beautiful now days. Today, girls wear so much makeup because they’re afraid that the real person underneath all the makeup won’t be good enough for society. In my opinion everyone is beautiful, society has just made it hard for their true beauty to be seen.

    Jane Alexander-
I think the type of beauty is this picture is natural beauty. She is the typical 'plain Jane' and I would assume she is from the renaissance period; she obviously doesn’t need makeup to cover up. She is simple and stunning; she appears to be very peaceful and calm.

    Princess Sofia-
The new Disney princess looks innocent, sweet and pretty. Just like all the other Disney princesses (wearing a tiara and with long wavy hair). Even though she is beautiful, there isn’t anything different or unique about her appearance, she is nothing out of the ordinary. I personally feel if Disney wanted a beautiful princess they should have a princess with no hair, that way little girls with cancer would feel beautiful too( because little girls dream to look like princesses, and seeing princesses like this will bring down the self-esteem and confidence of a little girl with cancer). Overall yes, I think she’s beautiful but she appears to be just a typical Disney princess.

  6. We do so many things so we can be viewed as "beautiful" by society. We spend hours looking at the person staring back at us in the mirror scrutinizing, worrying and wishing.
The real question here is what is beauty?
I personally believe that being beautiful isn't just having a pretty face. It's about having a pretty heart, a pretty mind and a pretty soul. That in my eyes is a true beauty !

We see in Jane Alexander's stunning sculpture called "Oh Yes Girl". It's portraying a woman who looks like she's been through so much. She's got this tired expression on her face showing that she's perhaps tired of being judged. Tired of trying to be "beautiful". The sculpture shows a woman with no make-up like she's saying "Take me as I am. This is the real me." Most men would never view the sculpture as beautiful as their idea of "beauty" is a woman with perfect eyes, teeth, hair and a perfect body.

Moving on to the new Disney princess - Sophia. Sophia is said to be a Latino princess yet she has nothing about her that represents a Latino woman. Instead she shows your typical Western woman. Where is her dark hair, dark eyes or her tanned skin ? People have forgotten about other cultures and races. Are they not beautiful just because they don't have fair skin, blue eyes or fair hair ? Society does not allow other individuals or other cultures' beauty to stand out because of their existing idea of what beauty should be.

  12. In this century we are judged, discriminated and worse because of the way we look. We are always worrying about what someone else thinks or what they are saying about us. Many people think they aren't beautiful because they aren't as pretty as Megan Fox, as skinny as Taylor Swift or as curvaceous as Jennifer Lopez but only if they knew beauty didn't just appear on the exterior but in many other places as well.

Beauty is many things. It isn't only about being a gorgeous face or body. There is beauty all around us, in nature, within in others,in the soul and most of all within the heart. That is what beauty truly is to me.

Jane Alexander - Oh Yes Girl
This is an experienced beauty filled with heart, soul and passion. She seems to be wanting, almost dreaming for something. She seems to almost be like a Russian doll with many layers and only once you peel back all those layers you will find the real her. She is so natural and clean, she doesn't need make up to become beautiful, she doesn't care what people say or think about her, as long as she is herself, she is happy. She looks like a strong woman who is confident and won't let anybody else bring her down.

    Disney's New Sofia Princess
She is a young, innocent beauty that still has so much to experience in life. She is like all princesses who are beautiful and petite which is very common. She seems almost fake in a way and is not a natural beauty like the previous piece of art.
She isn't unique in the slightest way which is quite disappointing. She is supposed be a Latino princess but she doesn't look like one in the slightest way, she doesn't have tanned skin, dark hair or dark eyes which is yet again a disappointment.

  17. At first glance of the sculpture "Oh Yes Girl" by Jane Alexander, i would say to myself, "She doesn't look too bad for a corpse". Not a lot of people would consider this sculpture "beautiful" but based on further observations, majority would probably change their minds.

The woman's complexion is flawless and cream coloured and would fit perfectly with today's top of the list skin colour preferences.
Her expression demonstrates that she is defeated, tired, sick and clearly says, "I've given up trying to look beautiful, I don't care anymore".
The woman's hair is similar to that of an old Barbie Doll, it looks old, dull and under nourished. Most of it is missing which was probably caused by various treatments in trying make her hair look beautiful and eye catching which is noticed in the neat curls, or just due to the fact that she is sick.
Her flesh coloured lace collar, that almost looks as if it's stitched onto her skin, indicates that beauty is apart of her, you've just got to search for it, like peeling off many layers to get to the beautified centre. It could also mean that she had gone through extreme pain to look beautiful, trying to make her beauty permanent. Her facial bone structure is beautiful, no doubt, she has raised cheek bones, her eyes are perfectly shaped to fit her features and her lips are like any other.

This woman is wonderful and unique in her own way. This sculpture by Jane Alexander gives a whole new meaning to the term 'Beauty'

  20. This sculpture by Jane Alexander called ‘Oh Yes Girl ’ gives a whole new meaning to beauty. Not the beauty we all know of but a different kind of beauty.
The fleshy colour lace collar appears to be sewn onto her skin suggesting that she had made beauty part of her and has gone through extreme pain to be beautified.
Her hair which appears to be implanted suggests that she could be old and could of been very ill and through treatments and medication the loss off hair occurred which is possibly the result of the implantation of her hair. Once again she has put much effort to be beautified.
The actual bone structure of her face like her cheek bone are all perfectly structured which shows us some of her natural beauty
Her colouring of her facial features i.e. her pale skin could suggest illness and therefore it appears pale .however her skin appears to be smooth and flawless showing her natural beauty too. Her bright lips show us more of her natural beauty.
Her body language or expression that in seen on her face suggests that she has given up and possible not interested anymore in beatifying herself.
However her natural features that are visualised such as her facial structure and glowing flawless fair skin outshines all the other points which gives us a conclusion that she does not need to beatify herself as she is already naturally beautiful, even though her expression and body could say that she is not interested in beauty.

  27. Jane Alexander's sculptor: Oh Yes Girl...
The woman in this sculptor takes beauty to a whole new level. Her beauty is natural.
She has on her skin a pretty flesh coloured lace collar, and this could be interpreted that she has made her beauty a part of herself. Her hair has been implanted like a barbie doll, and she is also half bald. This could mean that she is ill, or perhaps very old. The woman is not posing in an obvious fashion and infact seems to be experiencing an intense emotion. This makes her real and believable- and therefore more attractive and beautiful. She has sharp bones on her face and delicate features... which the sculptor has done justice to. The planes of her face are finely etched - another aspect of her beauty.

    Disney's new "Sofia" Princess...
Disney's new "Sofia" Princess is made to look beautiful. Her beauty seems fake as it depicts a streotyped version fo beauty that is seen everywhere but means little. She has HUGE blue eyes which are not human looking at all, but they make her look innocent, friendly and cute. This character is meant to be Latino but it seems that the creaters could not tear themselves away from the stereotype and have portrayed a Latino girl as having pale skin, blue eyes (which is highly sacred especially in Western European culture) and light brown hair which is highly impossible. Her chin is down, her head is tilted and her hands are behind her back. Interpretation: Again, it makes her seem innocent, kind and submissive. Her head is way too big for her body, which is tiny and seems undeveloped. This plays with our mind and makes her seem too small to hurt anyone and needs to be looked after. She has a lot of bling on her, such as the pearls and sequins on her dress and tiara and her bright and bold jewellery. This portrays that she is wealthy and the tiara is a symbol that she is a princess. Finally, the pink background makes it VERY girly, and targets the audience of very little girls.
These two pictures are examples of very diffrent types of beauty, which have been cleverly put together.

  29. Oh Yes Girl - The woman in this sculpture has her eyes closed and her head slumped to the side, indicating tiredness. She has hair that has been implanted into her head, like a doll. This symbolises how far women go to attain unachievable beauty. The lace collar also symbolises this, as it has been painfully sewn onto her skin. The woman is very thin, which could indicate starvation, another painful process women put themselves through to achieve beauty. The woman is pale, as she is tired and worn out from her attempts to beautify herself.

Sofia - Sofia has gigantic eyes, that make the viewer see her as childlike and innocent. She also does not look natural. She is very tiny, and this shows us that she needs protection and care. She has sparkly clothes, making her look elegant and rich. She has pale white skin, blue eyes and red hair, which should indicate a European heritage, while she is in fact a Latin-American. Her hands are behind her back, indicating submission and her harmless nature. Sofia has a certain unattainable beauty due to her minimised features.

  30. Oh Yes Girl:
She has a flesh coloured collar sewn onto her which might signify that she has gone through extreme pain to become beautiful.
The bald patches on her head might show that she has beautified herself too much, she is worn out, and now her hair is falling out.
She does not have eyebrows or eyelashes which might signify that she is sick or maybe ill.
The position of her face shows that she is tired of trying to be beautiful and she is 'over it'.
Her pale skin also shows that she is tired of trying to beautify herself.

    Disney's new Sofia Princess:
Sofia has exaggerated, big, bold eyes which shows that she is cute and innocent.
Her posture (chin down, hands behind her back) shows that she is not aggressive and makes her seem like an innocent little girl.
Her body is extremely tiny and her head is large which shows that she is very young, undeveloped, and too small to hurt anyone.
She is covered in bling (sequins, diamonds, sparkles, tiara). This shows that she is very wealthy and it tells us that she is a princess.
The pink background shows that she is veeerryyyy girly, and the colour also appeals to young girls.

  31. Oh Yes Girl:
She has a flesh coloured lace collar sewn onto her neck which symbolizes that she has gone through extreme pain to be beautiful.
Her loss of hair is possibly from lots of treatments which have destroyed her hair.
Her face is positioned in a way that shows her exhaustion and apathy.
She has no eyelashes or eyebrows which could be a result of damaging treatments or she could just be ill.
Her pale face also suggests she is ill but having bright painted lips could also mean she's still concerned about her appearance.

    Disney's new Sofia Princess:
Sofia has huge, exaggerated eyes which shows she is innocent and cute.
Her body is in baby proportions, big head, tiny body, which says shes young and undeveloped and again shows her innocence.
She is positioned in such a way that she appears to be submissive.
She is wearing lots of 'bling', which appeals to the target audience and shows that she is of high status.
The colours in the picture appeal to the audience and highlight the femininity and vulnerability of the princess.

  32. Sofia:
The society and the community (eg. American's idea on little "Latino" Sofia) perceive her beauty as a "Latino" girl even though she lacks the characteristics of a typical Latino (eg. the dark brown/black hair, dark eyes and olive skin completion have been replaced with sea blue eyes, reddish brown hair and pale white skin) Sofia's features are not only beautiful but quite typical of the American's idea on beauty. She as well as the other princesses have similar, over emphasised features (eg. the large head, large eyes and small waist )

"Oh Yes Girl" - Jane Alexander:
The "Oh Yes Girl" depicts a submissive faced woman. With her hair representing that of a Barbie doll (her hair looks as if pre-pin holes have been put in her head for her hair to be put in or that of a Highlighter Cap). The lace collar around the woman's neck could also depict her religious rites or her purity. Her head has been stylised to the side which may as well depict a docile attitude.

  33. "Oh Yes Girl" by Jane Alexander-
She is bald in the front and the tufts of hair in her scalp is symbolic of a old Barbie doll, tired, old and worn out. The flesh-coloured lace collar sewn into her skin shows that beauty is painful and could also mean that beauty will always be a part of her. Her pale- brown complexion and colour of her lips is dull and shows us she is completely drained and worn-out. She has no eye-lashes and no eyebrows which could have fallen off due to sickness or becoming of age. Lastly, her posture, head tilted down and eyes closed, shows her sleeping and perhaps lifeless(after being worn-out). Ultimately, I think it shows her being tired of "being beautiful".

    "Disney's New Sophia Princess"-
Firstly, she has big blue eyes which shows she is innocent and quite cute. Her posture (head tilted sideways, lowered chin, hands/arms behind her back) also shows her innocence and is a sign of submission and perhaps vulnerability. Her body is tiny, baby-like and undeveloped which shows us she is small and needs to be taken care of and nurtured. Her complexion is actually fair, not tan as it should be, which suggests she is not a Latino Princess after all. Her tiara, diamonds, pearls and necklace are symbols of wealth and status. The pink background is girly and appeals to younger girls. We can conclude that she isn't really a Latino Princess but does possess all the qualities of other Princesses.

  36. “Oh Yes Girl” – Jane Alexander

This sculpture has no eyebrows or eyelashes which could mean that she has been sick for a while (i.e. Cancer). She also has a skin coloured lace colour sewn onto her skin which gives us the idea that she has gone through extreme circumstances just to be beautiful and to make beauty part of her. Her skin colour is a pale ivory which also makes us think she is sick and in pain. Her tired expression suggests that she is over living and is weak. She also has tufts of hair stuck onto her head which shows that is old.

    “Sofia Princess”

Straight away we notice the bright pink background which we associate with little girls or girly-girls. Her eyes are big and bold making her look cute and irresistible. Her accessories are filled with diamonds, pearls and sequins as well as the tiara that sits on her head. This shows her wealth and status. Her posture is submissive, chin lowered, head tilted, hands behind back. We get the idea that she is not yet fully developed and needs care because her body is much smaller than her head. She also has a smooth pale face with rosy cheeks which makes us wonder if she actually is Latino..

  37. Hello Mrs Moore! Its Tanisha from 9C :)

Oh Yes Girl: This type of beauty is mature beauty. The first thing I noticed was her posture. She is tilting her head and her mouth is slightly opened which gives the perception that she is holding something back and she is a shy and timid type of person. The flesh colour lace collar below her neck could interpret that she has layers of beauty. Her thinning hair could show that she is elderly or has a sickness. Her lips are bright red in comparison to her pale skin pigment. Perhaps it is lipstick that makes her lips look so bright, and she wears it because she thinks she looks better, and when you look better you feel better. She has no eyelashes nor eyebrows which could also make her seem elderly or has a sickness.

Disney's New Princess Sophia: Sophia is more of a younger type of beauty. She is standing with her hands behind her back, her head tilted forwards and her chin down. This suggests that she seems innocent and graceful. She has big, bold and exaggerated eyes which could interpret that she is innocent, cute and sweet. The 'bling' she's wearing (from her dress to her tiara) suggests that she is quite a wealthy princess with a lot of money and status. She has a thin tiny body and her head doesn't seem in proportion, which gives us the perception that she is well looked-after and harmful. The controversial matter of her being Latino has not been reflected. Her hair is auburn in colour and her skin is too pale for a Latino. The pink background appeals to young girls because it is a bright and vibrant colour.

From these two images I can conclude that beauty has no specific definition. These two examples are very contrasting but both beautiful in their own ways. Beauty has no shape, size, age or colour. What people think is beautiful or not, is their matter of opinion, not a fact.

    ReplyDelete
  38. What beauty is to me?
Nowadays beauty is considered what you see on the surface. If someone is obese they are seen as unattractive. Many girls think that by applying make-up, doing their hair and dressing in lavish clothes that they would come across as beautiful. When in fact beauty is seen as more than that. My opinion is that your appearance does not make you beautiful but rather your personality. Beautiful women are women who portray many characteristics such as integrity, charisma, intelligence and elegance. The two most important factors that I believe contributes to being a beautiful person are to be natural and just to be yourself!

    Disney’s Sofia Princess
This petite young lass, who is still a blossoming child under the watchful eye of her parents this is shown by her tiny and undeveloped body. Her hand gesture along with her chin lowered reflects the innocence and submission of her character and those big eyes exude you with exaggeration yet cuteness and perfection. She may be a dainty little girl but be assured she has status and a fine eye for exquisite gems portrayed by her sparkling tiara and necklace. The pink background adds a subtle touch of the girly girl in every little girl.

    “Oh Yes Girl”
This sculpture reflects a lady who has been through many years of hardships and challenges shown through her pale skin tone and slowly diminishing tufts of hair that have been through lots of treatments. She does not have eyelashes and eyebrows this suggests that she is old or maybe very sick. The lace collar portrays the many layers to a woman, her natural beauty is skin deep and simplicity is most precious. It also represents that beauty is painful and is a part of her. The sublime colour of her lips add that feminine touch of a lady and her passive facial expression illustrations a lady who has overcome many hardships but has lived the journey of life and is still able to be gentle, nurturing and a fighter.

  39. In this ever-changing world, we are filled with ever-changing thoughts of beauty. What I may regard as gorgeous, you might think is ordinary and bland. Beauty is perceived by every individual differently. When I think of beauty I think about pure, make-up-less faces that look natural. I think of a river overflowing with colour, running through a black and white forest. I think of a young baby girl with big blue eyes attempting to smile. Beauty does come from within, but it’s our clothes, posture and faces that give people a first impression.

Review on ‘Oh Yes Girl’ by Jane Alexander
Red lips, pale face, eyes closed. Her mouth is slightly open, taking in the air that keeps her alive. The red lips suggest that the lady is elegant. Her eyes shut, she may be tired. She appears to be sad as she hangs her head low as if she cannot take any more of the hardships that she bears. Her hair is curly and brown complimenting her blood-red mouth. She also seems shy, not confident. She lacks eyelashes and her hairline is very far back. The lace collar around her neck seems tattered as though she isn’t wealthy enough to wear proper clothes. Perhaps she is poor which is why she isn’t wearing make-up. Her eyes are closed as though she doesn’t want us to know her story because eyes often tell more than words. The statue portrays more than plain beauty. It tells of a story that none of us know, but can only imagine.

Review on ‘Sophia’, Disney’s New Princess
Sophia is young, and innocent. Her head is tilted and her arms are folded behind her back which shows she is shy. Her cheeks are rosy and her skin is fair. She isn’t simple as her dress is decorated with sequins and she is wearing a silver tiara. She is supposed to be Latino, but she lacks the tawny skin, hazel eyes and silky black hair. Her eyes are big, blue and baby-like. Her nose is small and slightly resembles that of a kitten’s. The animation is displays stereotype, as the background is pink and Sophia seems to fit the ‘girly-girl’ type. She seems perfect, and harmless. To me, she isn’t beautiful as she looks like any ordinary Disney princess.

  40. Jane Alexander's Sculpture
    'Oh Yes Girl"

This woman has a sense of both natural and fake beauty. The woaman's hair seems to have fallen out either from illness, old age or extreme beauty treatment. Her skin is very pale which shows that she is either old or sick ,however, her skin is smooth and beautiful which shows us some of her natural beauty. She aslo has an elegant bone structure which shows us some of her 'down to earth' beauty. There is a fleshly lace collar sewn onto her skin which indicates that she may have gone through some extreme procedures to look beautiful. The woman may have lost her eyelashes and eyebrows due to old age, illness or more extreme beauty treatments. The way in which the woman is posing (shoulder's slightly slouched, head tilted to the side and facing slightly down, and eyes closed) indicates that she is tired of trying to look beautiful in the world's eyes and she has now resorted to natural beauty. Her lips are quite a bold and bright colour which indicates that she may still be slightly concerned about her appearance.

    Disney's New Sofia Princess

Disney has embraced the typical steroetype of a princess to a 'T'. Sofia has huge and adorable blue eyes which make her look naive and innocent (she hasn't been exposed fully to the world). She has diamond accessories ,such as her tiara and necklace, and her dress is decorated with stax of pearls which indicates wealth and royalty. Her pose (hands tucked behind back, head tilted to the side and chin slightly lowered) shows us that she is young and yet again, innocent. Her hair is groomed perfectly which tells us that she is always well presented to ensure that she looks the picture of perfection and beauty. The colours within Sofia's dress and the background of the picture appeals to young 'girly' girls. Her body is a lot smaller than her rather large head which shows us that she is still growing and discovering herself and the world. Her hair is light brown, her eyes are blue and her skin is extremely fair which doesn't resemble a Latino princess who should have dark brown hair, dark brown eyes and a tanned complexion.

  41. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”

Oh Yes Girl by Jane Alexander:
This sculpture shows beauty in a more realistic light, it shows all the extremities one would go through just to look beautiful. This sculpture has fleshy lace collar sewn onto her skin which in my opinion symbolises the pain and suffering one would go through just to have the “right look”. Her hair has been sewn on like a Barbie doll and it does not look like her natural hair which to me means that she, like many people today aren’t their natural selves and try to have fake hair and skin transplants to be beautiful. But no matter how much you try nothing lasts forever and some of that fake hair has come off. She has a very pale skin tone, many woman put powders on their face to make them look fair and use it to try and cover up their blemishes like this sculpture. She has no eyebrows or eyelashes which possibly symbolises that she is not complete with herself and doesn’t have every fine detail. Her expression and body language looks tired and depressed, it shows that she is simply fed up of trying to look like some princess which is how many woman feel today.

    Disney’s new Sofia Princess:
This picture is more of a fairytale perception of beauty. No one really looks like her or has such a perfect skin or poise. She has big, exaggerated eyes which show she is a cute, innocent little child. Her body language with her chin down and her hands behind her back is often something children do when they have done something wrong which symbolises she is on the childish playful side but also maybe has a submissive side. She has a pale skin tone and a light brown hair colour which is odd for a Latino princess. Latino’s are so suppose to have a dark skin tone and a darker hair colour therefore she is definitely different from other Latino’s! She also has a lot of jewellery, a tiara and sequins which can be interpreted as a wealthy upper class person. Her dress is also very elegant and shows her status. The purple colour of her dress and pink colour of the background makes it appeal too many of the young girls of today.

  43. The new Disney princess Sophia looks very innocent because of her big bold eyes. She looks cute with these bold eyes however they do not look human as they are much larger than human’s eyes. Her posture which show her chin lowered, head tilted, hands behind her back makes her look Submissive. Her body is baby proportioned as her head is much larger than the rest of her body. This gives us the suggestion that this princess is very young of age, needs to be looked aftered by someone and is in need of our care. Princess Sophia is told to be Latino, however her pale rosy skin does not suggest that she is Latino. Princess appears to wear a lot of bling for example, her tiara which has diamonds and her dress which filled with pearls and sequence. The tiara on her head tells us that she is a princess. All this bling symbolises wealth. The pink background is a very girlie
colour gives off a feeling off childhood fantasies. This pink background mainly attracts little girls.

In society we live in today, beauty can mean different things to different people and can cause many conflicts. There is the fear, for example, of not being quite “right”, not being “normal”, not matching the “image” of beauty. People today are being bombarded with images of what they are “supposed” to look like and have a feeling of “needing to conform”. Underneath all this, what they really want is to feel loved. To me, beauty means being comfortable in your own skin and not being afraid to be different. Beauty is being able to embrace who you are and to be original. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

"Oh Yes Girl" by Jane Alexander
I think the type of beauty that is being portrayed is natural beauty; I would assume it is from the renaissance period by way it is sculpted. This sculpture is a prime example of being comfortable in your own body by it being sculpted naked. Her expressions reveal that she is tired and distressed by her body language. Her skin tone is very pale, lips very dark and her hair resembles an old Barbie’s doll, dull, old, most of it missing which was probably caused by various treatments. She has neither eyebrows nor eyelashes. Her flesh coloured lace collar almost looks as if it is stitched onto her skin which indicates that beauty is a part of her and certainly that beauty is pain, no pain, no gain.

    Disney's New Sofia Princess
Disney has attempted to bring variation into its world of typical white princesses with blue eyes, but has failed sadly. Princess Sofia looks like any other Disney princess. Even though she is beautiful, there isn't anything different or unique about her appearance. Sofia’s eyes are exaggerated to look sweet and innocent, they are definitely not in human proportion. Her body language suggests that she is submissive. Her body is in baby proportions, meaning, her head is larger by comparison to her body. Sofia’s bling implies that she is wealthy and for status purposes. A Latino princess should have dark brown hair, brown eyes and a tanned skin tone, not pale skin and rosy cheeks. The pink background evokes the interests of many little girls. I guess Disney’s idea of beauty is superficial.

I believe the Oh Yes Girl shows the body of a woman who has gone through many pains - emotionally and definitely physically. I believe the lace nude tone color sown into her skin shows that beauty is a part of you and you can never take it off or change it.it could also show that we have many different layers of beauty to us and that every one is different to the last. She has a gaunt face and almost no hair, her posture is resigned and tired. This could show that she was ill or old and that she can still manage to have an air of beauty. The Oh Yes Girl has no eyebrows or eyelashes, she has pale skin and no make up or long hair. These are characteristics that are taken into account when deciding beauty and she has little or none of them. The Oh Yes Girl may not fit the commercial outline of beauty but shows us that through all her pain and suffering, all her illness and age beauty is untouchable - she managed to be beautiful and it was the first thing I noticed before I even saw the scars and cuts and hair.

    Sophia - Disney's new princess

Sophia may not be the stereotypical 'Latino' she was promised to be - with her pale skin, blue eyes and auburn hair- but to the young viewers who watch her this is not such a huge deal. Sofia is a very trusting person, or that is how her features portray her to be. she has hugely over exaggerated big blue eyes that are almost inhuman. These show innocence and make her seem trustworthy. her stance is submissive and quiet, showing shyness. Sophia has baby-like proportions with a very undeveloped body which makes her seem young and child-like. Sophia's jewelry shows her status and wealth as a princess, establishing her as something all young girls aspire to be. All-In-all Sophia is a gentle and trusting character that young girls will look up to for moral guidance no matter what her skin, hair or eye color may be.

Sofia's beauty is something close to "perfect". She has the ideal figure and is the picture society has painted as to how a girl should be or look. Her big eyes are bold and stands out. It gives us the impression that she is innocent and cute. Her head lowered, chin down, hands behind back posture gives us the impression that she is friendly and harmless. Sofia's complexion is very pale, she has rosy skin (does not look Latino). The jewellery on the princess tells us she is wealthy and is of high status (tiara, diamonds etc). Finally the pink coloured back round tell us that Sofia Princess is girly, a little girl.

    -Oh Yes Girl
The beauty in the sculptor by Jane Alexander is very different to Disney’s new Sofia Princess. Here we see beauty in a very different way. We see beauty from a different view. The beauty here looks as if it was from the period of the Renaissance. We see pain through this beauty. The flesh coloured lace could tell us that beauty is part of oneself and beauty is pain. In the sculptor we see tufted hair; we could interpret it as the woman is sick. This beauty is natural beauty (no make-up). There is a pale coloured surrounding, we see no colour to the beauty in Oh yes girl. By interpreting this we could conclude that maybe Oh yes Girl has had a colourless life, there was no highlights and joys in her life. Also the posture in this sculptor shows us pain. It tells us that the woman has been through pain. As I said in the beginning beauty is pain (tufted hair, flesh coloured lace collar

  52. Jane Alexander's
    Oh Yes girl:

This sculpture shows that maybe she has been through many challenging times as we can see in her passive expression and her hung over posture. She has a flesh coloured lace collar sewn onto her chest! i feel that maybe Jane was trying to state that woman go through excruciating pain to be beautiful. Her hair is stuck on her head in tufts, she is half bald, looks like she would have had hair implants or transplants once again going through extreme pain to be beautiful. Her hair also reminded me of a barbie doll's head of hair it is shoved into holes in their head stating pain to be beautiful. People nowadays go for face lifts, tummy tucks and even dye their hair so that people cannot see their grey hair coming through. Woman try to stay young for as long as possible. She has no eyelashes or eyebrows which could have fallen out due to old age or just an illness. Her pale complexion may show that she was ill or is trying to cover up her blemishes to seem as if there is nothing wrong with her or just seem young and problem free.

    Disney's new Sofia Princess:

Disney's new Sofia Princess is supposed to be a Latino Princess yet looks like a typical American as she has the complete wrong complexion she is pale and is supposed to have a darker more "tanned" complexion. Her eyes are blue instead of brown and her hair is light brown instead of the stereotypical darker brown for Latino's. She has a tiny, thin body which may show that she is still young, undeveloped and needs to be looked after. She has a huge head and a small body which also shows that she has not finished growing. She has very big, exaggerated and "puppy-dog" eyes to show that she is innocent and naive. Her posture and body language with her hands behind her back and lowered chin shows submission and innocence. She has a very detailed dress with pearls and sequins on it which show that she is wealthy and has status (princess). The pink background also gives us the impression of her being sweet, kind and once again innocent and will draw the attention of little girls!

Over all i think beauty can get a bit far fetched, with woman always dressing up to look good and beautiful. Wearing make-up to seem prettier and perfect. Going for excruciating operations to be accepted in society as beautiful.

  53. Hi there Miss Moore :)

This is my observation and interpretation of the sculpture by Jane Alexander- Oh Yes Girl and Disney's Latina Princess Sofia.

Oh Yes Girl- Jane Alexander Sculpture
She has a flesh coloured lace collor that has been graphted onto her body that could mean that she would go through extreme pain to fit the image society says is beautiful, or this could show the layers of her beauty. She could have been bald, as her hair looks as if it had been sown on like a Barbie doll. She could have also been sick and old, so her hair could have fallen off. She also has no eyebrows or eyelashes showing she could have been a bit 'old fashioned' or incomplete as a person. She might have felt like a part of her was missing. Her body language is very sloppy and tired. She looks very depressed and distressed. Her lip colour is a very distinct 'coral' lip colour.

    Disney's new Sofia Princess
Sofia is a Disney Princess...she doesn't look a tad Latino to me even though she was supposed to represent a dark haired and dark eyed, tanned group of people called the Latino's. Sofia's eyes are big and very exaggerated so it paints the picture that she is innocent, cute and sweet. Her chin is lowered, head is tilted and her hands are behind her back making her seem submissive and harmless. She has a tiny body, that is thin and undeveloped showing that she is still small and needs to be looked after. Her hairis light brown wheras the Latino's have dark hair as well as tanned bodies whereas Sofia is pale and rosy which isn't Latino. She also wears a lot of bling as in her tiara, diamonds and pearls which show her wealth and princess status.

Society interprets beauty in many different ways and as Lew Wallace said 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'

  54. Hi there Miss Moore. This really is amazing to be able to do our Art online, I'm still baffled by it. I have observed and interpreted the following on the artworks above:

    ''Oh Yes Girl''-Jane Alexander
The lady in the picture lookes very much in pain and agony. She may have aged prematurely from some sort of stress and emotional breakdown due to what society may expect of her.
Her skin is unusually pale, waxy and almost deathlike. This could indicate the face of a corpse or a dying woman. She may, also, have encounted some suffering by the expression on her face. Her cheeks are sunken and her face is drawn. She is also very thin which could indicate that she has died of a terminal illness, which would explain the receeding hairline, possibly she had had some chemotherapy for cancer. The only part of her that has some colour, are her lips which could have been done with lipstcik as they do on a corpse. Her head is inclined. This could show that she is sick and tired and worn out. There is a lace collar sewn onto her skin. She may have had this sewn to try and appear more elagant and feminine. She also has no eyebrowns, they could have fallen out along with her hair, or been pulled out to look more beautiful. Beauty costs pain.

    ''Sophia''-Disney
She is what every Disney princess has been like since the dawn of time. Fair, blue eyes, innocent etc.
Her skin is fair (NOT like a Latino), with flourishing pink cheeks. This gives us the impression that she is young, sweet and cute. She has big, round blue eyes. They once again are an indication of her innocence as a child. Her eyebrows are of a perfect shape, making her look as if she is perfect herself. Her head is not in proportion and is leaning playfully to the side and her hands are behind her back as if she couldn't hurt a soul. She is wearing a pretty dress which is very often a symbol of girlhood, or in this case, 'princesshood'. Adorned to her dress are little diamonds and embroidery upon the shoulders. She also wears a tiara obviously indicating she is a princess not a queen.

So as we can see, people interpret beauty differently and we as a passenger of life need to take in different opinions and then make an informed choice, and decide for ourselves what we think BEAUTY is. And I think that as Shanice says, Lew Wallace is completely right.

  56. These are two completely different kinds of beauty.

    Oh Yes Girl
With the Oh yes girl, it is the kind of plain and simple beauty. The flesh coloured collar suggests that beauty is painful and that being beautiful can come at a price. The position of the head tells us she is maybe drained and exhausted but it could also show this type of down to earth, girl’s next door sort of beauty once again we see that that is very plain and simple. She has very little hair which suggests that Jane wanted us to know that she is old and vintage. We also see that the Oh Yes Girl is a mature woman with very pale and this could also speak to woman that you don’t need tons of make-up to make you beautiful because beauty comes from the inside. Her mouth is slightly open and her lips are very dry which could mean she is dehydrated.

    Sofia Princess
With the Disney princess it is very different kind of beauty, one which is young, innocent and sweet. This beauty is the perfect pageant queen beauty. The first thing you notice is her big, blue eyes which immediately makes you feel as though she is young, innocent and cute. She very thin which could mean she is undeveloped and she needs parental care. She has diamonds on which tell you she is someone of wealth and status, as she is young and has a status some people would call her daddy’s little girl or daddy’s little princess. The pink background maybe to appeal to Disney’s target audience, little girls. Her posture with her chin down and head tilted makes you think she is very cute and it also makes you fall in love with this princess.

  57. " Oh Yes Girl " -Jane Alexander
Starting from the top of the head going downwards...

Her hair seems to be that of an old person. She also seems to be from the middle age / renaissance times when they were still trying or estimating what was good for the hair and what was not. She seems to have used many hair products resulting in the hair loss and the bald patch near the back of her head. Her hair seems to be that of a barbie doll, like loose tufts of hair that were just stuck on her head. The colour of her skin is pale so that also tells us that she stayed at home where it was at her will or not, we are not sure. She has full bright lips probably indicating that she was a beautiful lady, back in her day. Her face looks a bit obscured because of the face that she has no eyebrows or even eye lashes. Finally her posture and lace collar. Her collar seems to be sewn onto the skin and is the colour of flesh. It seems like a layer of "ugliness" that she had to strip off to find her inner beauty. Her posture seems very uncomfortable I.e. One of a corpse.

    Sophia Disney Princess

Her eyes are overly exaggerated making her "cute" as to speak and is also a true sign of her innocence. Her posture is one that shows a sign of submission or innocence. The size of her body is not in proportion. Her body is tiny and she has a huge head. Also her body is underdeveloped, she has baby proportions. She is also far too young to be looking after herself and her posture sort of conveys her not yet adult perceptions. Many have complained that she looks NOTHING like a Latino when she's actually supposed to be one. So the interpretation of the character was not very good.
As the saying goes " Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend " it is obviously true with this young princess. She is wealthy and seems to have a lot of status. The Tiara is also a symbol of her being a princess. The pink coloured backround makes it open to little or young girls that this is the way life is supposed to be. She becomes that of an idol to the younger kids since they can relate to her and her "Pink" surroundings.

  58. Beauty looks not with the eyes but with the heart

    Oh Yes Girl:
The Sculpture of the Oh Yes Girl by Jane Alexander is quiet an extra-ordinary one. The flesh coloured lace collar shows the amount of pain that people would go through just to be 'made'beautiful. The added toughs of hair is like a barbie doll's hair, it could interpret to us that she may have been ill at the time. Also some some of the hair from the front is missing maybe because she styled her hair a lot and tried to make it as beautiful as possible.
There isn't a lot of bright colour used except for her lips although her face is very pale which could also add to the effect that she may have had an illness. She also has no eyebrows and eyelashes, this makes her face look even more plain but still attracts the eye of people to look at it. In my opinion I think people shouldn't go through pain to make themselves look 'prettier' because everyone is beautiful and unique in their own way!

    Disney's New Sofia Princess:
At first glance, she has a sparkle that would definitely attract young girls especially with a pink background. The dress that she is wearing has diamonds and 'bling' on it which is a symbol of wealth. Also the purple colour is a soft one not a very bright colour. She is also wearing a tiara which shows us she is a princess and it has sparkling diamonds on it. Her skin colour is not one of a Latino's but she is very fair with rosy cheeks just like other Disney princesses. She has a tiny body and is thin although her head is larger than her body (baby proportions) which tells us she is a young child that should be looked after. Sofia has bold, bright and sweet eyes which are exagerated like baby animals i.e puppies(cute and innocent)it is simplified, inhuman. Her posture and the way in which her head is tilted shows her innocence and that she's not aggressive by having her hands behind her back, she is is a pretty and humble child.

  59. Jane Alexander's "Oh Yes Girl..." isn't what first comes to mind when you hear the word beauty. Her flesh coloured lace collar shows how people put themselves threw tones of pain just to try and imitate society’s perception on "beauty". Her hair looks like that of a Barbie doll after it has been pulled and tugged at by a 2 year old girl representing the effects of years of dying and re-dying your hair. Her pale completion and bright lips show how we cover our faces day after day with layers of make up to try and look like the models and celebrities we all look up to. Her posture shows a tired and not particularly interested individual who has just about given up. With a lack of eyebrows and eyelashes we come to think that she has gone through countless treatments to again try perceive societies idea of "beauty". Although she is not what most of us would call "beautiful" she is beautiful in her own way. This sculpture shows us that everything can be beautiful we just have to look at it the right way.
Disney’s new Sofia princess is the typical idea that comes to mind when you hear the word beauty. Her big blue eyes just scream cute! And make her look innocent and harmless. Her face is childlike and very much like all the other Disney princesses that perceive societies idea of “beautiful”. The creators of this Disney princess are trying sell this fair skinned brunet hared little girl off as a “Latino” , whereas most Latino's are dark skinned and have black hair. Her dress is filled with sparkles and her hare has a very sparkly tiara, this shows she has the so called status that we all wish we had. And lastly the pink background gives the picture that oh so girly feel. Most of us would call this little girl beautiful and I tend to agree.

  60. Jane Alexander: Oh Yes Girl

Her hair: her hair is just loose tufts which have been added onto her skulp. Ths could be because she is old, sick or that she went through lots of treatments to be beautiful.
Her Posture: judging from her posture, I think that she is tired of worrying about trying to be beautiful.
Her eyes: her eyes are closed and she doesn’t have any eyelashes or eyebrows which contributes to the idea that she is tired.
Her mouth: is slightly open as if she wanted to say something but didn’t get too.
Her lace collar: is sewn onto her skin and is flesh-colored which could mean that she made her beauty a part of herself or that it takes extreme pain to be beautiful.

    Sofia Princess

Background: the background is a very girly , light type of pink because the color pink will appeal to younger girls.
Posture: she has her chin lowered, head tilted and her hands behind her back which makes her seem cute and innocent .
Her body: she has a tiny, thin , undeveloped body with a big head to make her seem like a baby and sends out the message that she is small and needs to be looked after and its is also a look of innocence.
Bling: she is wearing pearls, tiaras and diamonds to show that she is wealthy and that she is a princess. It also shows that she has status.
Her eyes: are huge to make her look cute and innocent

  62. Oh yes Girl: Due to the closed eyes it is impossible to see any expression, therefore it acts as a barrier to conveying beauty because the eyes are the windows to the soul.

The colours on the Disney picture are very traditionally 'pretty' and uplifting, whereas the Jane Alexander piece is very neutral and subdued - the beauty seems muted.

Both characters are tilting their heads, but the Disney picture creates a coy, sweet impression, while the tilt of the head in the Jane Alexander pose seems to create a feeling of sadness and fragility. There is the impression that the latter piece shows a former beauty, almost as if we are witnessing the depiction of a corpse.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Princess Sofia:

She is out of proportion, but this is to emphasise the cute/baby-like looks that is appealing. She has rose bud lips and big, bright bold eyes. She has little details, but they focus on the things that are "beautiful". The beauty is also in the fact that she looks like a fantasy princess.

    Yes Girl:

The colours are very different. She has pronounced cheek bones and jawline and her hairline is receding. She has a delicate appearance - and is in a withdrawn position in contrast to the posing of Sofia. Her features are individually each beautiful - her aqualine nose, shoulders and lips, but her beauty is more realistic and we are drawn to her because her features are not perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Jane Alexander conveys a more realistic idea of beauty whereas Disney is more a caricature.

    ReplyDelete
  65. SOFIA

Beauty can be seen and interpreted differently in the eyes of others. For instance in the eyes of the Americans little Sofia is seemed to be "Latino" even though she has an extremely light complexion, sky blue eyes and reddish-brown hair thus making her unidentifiable as a Latino princess. Her bodily features are over dramatized and her pose is very innocent but still she portrays a unique look that makes her beautiful.

    OH YES GIRL

The "Oh Yes Girl" portrays a very strange kind of beauty almost as if shes a broken doll. She has a very docile face and her head is stylized to the side making her look depressed and as if she has been abused or is in pain. Her eyes are closed therefore not allowing you to see what she is thinking. Yet deep within her you can sense there is inner beauty.

  69. Oh yes girl.

She has a skin coloured collar sewn into her skin, which could mean that she went through a lot of pain to be “beautiful” it could also symbolise that her inner beauty is now being revealed. She has hair missing on her fore head and she doesn’t have eyelashes or eyebrows which could mean that she went through so much to try and fit into society’s idea of “beautiful”. She also has bright red lips which is the usual idea of “beauty” in most generations. Her facial expressions show us that she must be tired of trying to be “perfect” and that she is just being herself, letting lose, not caring what people think about her.

    Sofia the Disney Princess

Sofia is the typical image of what are, in societies eyes “beautiful’ she has big, innocent blue eyes, fair, clear skin and curly brown hair. She is what most people would say, a stunning young girl. She is the type of girl that makes girls feel insecure about their appearance. Her clothing is clean, bright and pretty, however what she is wearing is predictable because, she is a princess and is covered in bling (diamonds, sequins and sparkles) because she is a princess, she is very wealthy so she obviously would be wearing these things. Her posture is one that shows a sign timidity or innocence. The size of her body is not in proportion, her body is very small and she has a very big head, which tells us again about her child like characteristics. The pink coloured background makes it more entreating to little or young girls. She becomes an idol to the younger girls, they can relate to her and her "Pink" surroundings because most of them will love pink.

  71. Jane Alexander’s “Oh Yes Girl”
Yes, despite what others said upon seeing this sculpture – and yes, I have asked - it is ultimately seen as gruesome to those not using an interpreting eye.
In my opinion, I see a woman who is clearly under stress, seen from her facial expression, and I find it beautiful that a woman is willing to sacrifice her well-being for others, an example being; to support her family by working hard.
She has very little or no facial hair, and I think this could be the artist’s interpretation of pureness, or rather, something unscarred, and fresh.
She is very plain, save for the lace collar around her neck – indicating that 1) she does not succumb to society’s fake pretense of make-up equaling beauty, and 2) she has an appreciation for the classic time, possibly of the Renaissance, when beauty was seen in every aspect of life, and this represents the beauty that we should see in the sculpture.
And lastly, as it has been discussed in our classes, her hair appears to have been inserted in tufts, like a Barbie doll, and thus I think the artist tried to associate the sculpture with such a doll, an idol of “beauty” in today’s society, possibly to create a connection for those who are under this impression of Barbie – an impression a bit more explained below.

    Disney’s Sofia
At first, one would think that identifying “beauty” in this picture would be easy, but they must also realize that a stereotyped impression has been made on us, and some fail to explain it, which is what I am now attempting to do.
Sofia emits a “cute” factor, with big eyes, and pouty pink lips, and perfect wavy hair. She also has sparkles on her dress, and fancy jewellery, which are said to add “beauty” to a plain woman. She wears purple, and the colours of the background, pink, are girlie hues, and embody femininity.
However, I feel that Sofia, who is supposedly a Latino, shames those of other cultures – cultures that are not privy to fair skin and blue eyes. Also, everything about her is perfect, so to say, and “a real girl isn’t prefect, and a perfect girl isn’t real.” She also has very dark, distinct eyelashes, and rosy cheeks, which would give the impression she was wearing make-up – wavering from being natural, and this, is poor empowerment on Disney’s part, as they should be encouraging girls to be themselves, and not to change the way they look.
I hope that this is substantial to my belief that Disney should have followed a less superficial route, and had they really wanted to create a princess to raise awareness – and it appears they had – they should have attempted to change the common view of what people think “beauty” is, instead of – once again – succumbing to it. But I am mistaken – they have not only succumbed to it, but they have also helped to create it in their past renditions of “beauty.”

  72. picture 1: Jane Alexander- Oh Yes Girl...
Shows that you don't have to wear make-up, dress up and look pretty to be noticed. Your beauty is as well as on the outside appearance, on the inside. It depends on your attitude, personality and actions, believing in yourself and blocking out all negative comments from others around you.

picture 2: Disney's new Sofia princess
Shows her beauty on the outside with what she is wearing, like her neat, expensive dress, tiara and necklace, her hair is also neat and looks perfect and her make-up is pretty; her outside beauty is also shown by her posture- displaying that she is royal. She also looks young, soft, sweet and innocent, with some help from her big blue eyes.

  74. Beauty is not only about physical appearances but also what’s on the inside.

    'Oh Yes Girl'
Looking at the sculpture ‘Oh Yes Girl’ by Jane Alexander shows that beauty is not only on the outside. The lady’s closed eyes and slumped head show that she is tired, from working very hard or striving to be beautiful. Her hair looks as if she has done something to it to make it look beautiful and it did not work out very well because now most of her front hair is missing and her hair looks very unhealthy or she could have been bald and decided to put on a wig thinking she would look better. Her skin colour looks as if she had skin treatment to improve skin quailty, which had a negative result. The lace collar seems to have been sewn onto the lady. This could show that she wants her beauty to stay and never leave like the lace that is sewn onto her. It shows that she has undergone a lot of pain to try to be beautiful. This lady went through a lot to try and make herself beautiful without realising that she was already beautiful.

    Princess Sofia
Sofia is supposed to be a Latino princess but when I look at her all I see is a typical Disney princess, she has pale skin unlike the Latino people who have tanned skin and her hair is also not very similar to Latino people as they have darker hair than Sofia. Her big round blue eyes and rosy pink cheeks make her look cute and innocent. Unlike the lady in the sculpture Sofia’s beauty isn’t real it is made up. Sofia’s diamond tiara and necklace shows that she comes from a wealthy family. The way her head is tilted and her posture shows that she is playful and young. Sofia's beauty is totally different to the beauty of the sculpture 'oh yes girl' as there are many different types of beauty. In many little girls eyes Sofia is the perfect example of beauty not only because they think she's beautiful and a princess but they are also mesmerised by the pretty dress, jewellery and colours.

  75. Hi Miss Moore!

    Jane Alexander “Oh Yes Girl”-
-I think the type of beauty is this picture is fake beauty. It represents what a person would do to look beautiful, in a surgical way.
-her hair seems as if it has been sewn on, like an old Barbie doll.
-She has a rather large forehead which makes her appear bald in the front. Her forehead comes out whereas her eyes go in. it looks as if she has had botox done on her forehead and cheeks.
-Her complexion is dull and makes her appear tired. Which gives us the idea that she is tired, tired of trying to be beautiful.
    - Her face expression/ body language makes us think she is depressed. (The way in which her head is tilted also because her eyes are closed)
    - She looks as if she’d been through several surgical processes just because she wants to look beautiful. Her mouth looks as if she has just sighed, because she is tired.

    Princess Sofia-
-The new Disney princess looks innocent, sweet and pretty. Just like all the other Disney princesses (wearing a tiara and with long wavy hair).
-Even though she is beautiful, there isn’t anything different or unique about her appearance, she is nothing out of the ordinary. (just like all the other princesses, she has long hair a tiara and a ball gown)
    - Her posture gives us the idea that she is quite innocent (her hands behind her back and standing upright and straight, big eyes)
-We are given the idea that she is wealthy because of the jewellery she wears and the way she is dressed, she appears to be of a much higher class.
    - She has a pale complexion and light brown hair which is unusual for a Latino princess as Latino’s are usually tanned with dark brown hair.

She has brown hair that flows down to her shoulders. She has big blue eyes. Her skin is fair and she has rosy cheeks. Seems to me that she is nothing special compared to the other Disney princess. There is nothing unique about her, sometimes beauty is about not being perfect. Maybe if she had rich natural tanned skin or even brown eyes. She would look a bit Latin.
    Oh yes girl
Her porcelain like skin. Her eyes are closed and she has dark brown wavy hair. She could be considered beautiful in an artistic manner. She seems so tired of life, like she has given up. Many women of today feel like this, even teenagers. Beauty can be shown and described in many ways and I think she is cause of her being unique and unusual.

Princess Sofia has a kind of traditional beauty, with her seemingly flawless features. Her cute expression, with her doe-like eyes and angelic smile, make her appear innocent, and her brightly coloured dress makes us think that her personality is just as bright, although her beauty could come across as artificial and stereotypical. Her hands are behind her back, so she seems open and shy as opposed to the arms-crossed-in-front-of-chest gesture which we associate with unfriendliness. She is also Latin, which makes her unique as she is the only ethnically different princess.

The ‘Oh Yes Girl’ sculpture, although having little conventional beauty, does in fact have a few ‘hidden’ bits of beauty. For instance, she has a high forehead, which is often associated with intelligence, and her calm expression (eyes closed, face relaxed) gives the impression that she is peaceful throughout her suffering. On the other hand, her closed eyes could give her a sense of mystery, as eyes are often referred to as ‘windows to the soul’. She is also naked, which makes her appear vulnerable or innocent like a child. She comes across as being just an item the way she is hanging and being supported by a metal bar, making us think about gender inequality and/or mutilation.

  80. Sofia:

Princess Sofia is the image of what everyone thinks a princess is suppose to look like because they have instilled this in our minds. Sofia is suppose to be Latin American yet she looks nothing like one making her seem fake because she has light skin and light brown hair. this gives the impression that all Latin Americans are suppose to look like this. if you look at all the other Disney princesses they are all slim, slender, with light skin and is seen as perfect when in actual fact nobody is. The beauty that is shown in this picture is outside beauty.

    Oh Yes Girl:

The Oh Yes Girl represents inner beauty. It shows how women are preceived. Indiacating in this photo that she is apiece of meat in the way she is placed on a pole. This pole is similar to the way Jesus was hung on a cross giving us the impresion of suffering. inner beauty shown by the Oh Yes Girl is the beauty that counts most.

  81. When we look at “Oh yes girl” we think of female female mutilation. Her body looks skinny and unhealthy, this shows that she is starving herself to fit in. She is hanging by her arms on a metal pole. This shows us that she is sacrificing herself to female mutilation and abuse. It also shows us that she isn’t independent and won’t stand up for herself. Her body language and position is showing us that also shows us that she lets things happen to her. The lace stitched around her shoulders and neck shows that she is trying to change herself to impress other people.

  82. When we looked at “Oh Yes Girl”, the first thing we noticed was the fact that she was nude. We interpreted this as a symbol of no respect towards her. The scars and cuts on her body show how she was constantly abused and uncared for. With regards to that, the fact that she is hung implies that she can’t stand on her own because other people have presided over her for a long time. Her blank facial expression insinuates the fact that she gave up fighting back against her oppressors a long time ago. Her receding hair line reveals her lack of access to sanitation. Her body looks rancid which hints to the fact that she might have been found a long time after her death.

Princess Sofia is wearing the colour purple which often represents royalty. The combination of her large blue eyes and the way her hair is tucked behind her ear shows innocence. The pink background shows shes a young girly girl. Her rosy cheeks and the way in which her hands are behind her back tell us she is shy and also makes her look cute. Red hair is often associated with fair skinned people but she is meant to be latino (darker skinned). The pearls on her dress, the tiara on her head and the emerald chain around her neck is an example of European style jewelry, and also shows she is wealthy.

oh yes girls blank expression on her face tell us that she has stopped fighting the people who hurt and abuse her.I think that her eyes are closed because she is tired of being abused. Her skin and hair condition is a sign that she neglects herself. Her body condition is a sign of malnutrition and abuse. Her body is held up by a pole ,which means that she cannot stand up on her own.

  86. Oh yes girl
The perception of beauty we get of oh yes girl, is the kind that shows us a women that has a lot of experience and knowledge to share on life. We see that her expression shows us that even though she been through a lot she's contented with who she is and how she looks. The way her eyes are closed and the way she’s pulling her mouth shows that she has been through heartache and trauma. Her hair shows that she does not take a great deal of pride and care in herself.

    Oh Yes Girl

The Oh Yes Girl is portrayed as a hurt soul who has undergone pain and stressful circumstances as she was on a quest to be beautiful. Her anorexic figure explains she thought that being beautiful means being thin. It looks as if she has gone onto a self destructive mode because of the failure of being perfectly beautiful or possessed. She seems like she diagnosed with an illness as she has no eyelashes and eyebrows, she is also balding. The image could not necessarily be a women but a man trying to be a woman or a graceful example of a man.

Oh Yes Girls- Her hair tells us that she had highlights on because she wanted to be liked by others. Her closed eyes and tilted head tells us a sad story that she suffers from a disease or depression. Her pale dry skin and bony face tells us she hasn't eaten for several days or is anorexia. The stitches on her body show us that she has been joined together and her palms are open like she is waiting to be played like a doll.

    Princess Sofia

A Disney princess with red curly hair and a tiara on top. Her big blue eyes that blossom and show her kindness and gentleness to others. Her purple dress with bedazzled pearls tells us that she comes from a wealthy and respected family. Her overall look from top to bottom tells us that she is a well-mannered and a shy person and takes care of herself like the young princess she is. The pink backround surely does rap it up by telling us that she is a girly girl
