Texture and van Gogh

For my Grade 10s .....

Analytical activity:

Look at the above image, then try out some of the textures on scraps of paper. (Hint: read the list of materials above)

Try making some of these pens (make your own!)....

How to make a reed pen

Feather quill pens

• Glue these scraps to a poster.
• Explain how you made them in words.
• Write down what they represent in the drawing.
• Now write a paragraph on van Gogh's use of texture. (Include the name of the drawing and the date) (How long is a paragraph???? ..... about 60 words to 1/2 page)

CRITERIA

• Learner's intention/proposal 5 (this will only be clear AFTER you have done your investigations and experiments)
• Investigation of a variety of approach(es) and idea(s) 10
• Exploration and experimentation of materials and techniques which must include at least ONE tonal drawing 20 (HEAVY marks!)
• Reflective report on completion of final practical work 5
• Presentation and overall view of the sourcebook 10
• TOTAL 50

SECTION B: THE ARTWORK (LO2)

CRITERIA

• Choice and use of materials/techniques 10 (this is on-going while you work)
• Use of formal art elements 10 (this is on-going while you work)
• Overall impression of work – originality, creativity, innovation 10 (this comes together towards the end)
• Interpretation and practical implementation of research 10 (this is on-going while you work)
• Completion and presentation of artwork 10 (this comes together at the end)
• TOTAL 50

YOU DECIDE		ACTIVITIES
1. Who does Banksy’s Slave Labourbelong to? 2. Is street art only meaningful when it is in its original setting? Why?		1. Consider Slave Labour, or another piece of street art that you particularly like. Write a short analysis of how it draws meaning from its particular context and place. 2. Go on a search for graffiti, and create a short film or photo essay about the street art in your area.
