Paper cutout animation

For my Grade 9s ............

This is a beautiful idea for a way to use paper cutout figures.
Watch   .....
The Fish and the Doll  - LINK

The Fish and the Doll by Orla Wren
First you would need to write a simple SHORT poem.
Then create an 'idea storyboard' about your animation, by using rectangles with writing under them.
We can do this in class.

Dube and Verster collaboration - Craft & Applied Art

For my Grade 12s .....

The theme of Craft and Applied Art looks at the difference (if there is one?) between Fine Art, Craft, Design and Applied Art.
Andrew Verster is a painter (Fine artist) who worked with Hlengi Dube (a master craftsperson) to produce a new range of beaded jewellery for the African Art Centre.

Animated cut out figures -Tessa Comrie

For my Grade 9s .......

This is a wonderful example of an animation.
Look at the use of real rice, tea leaves and chopsticks.
We could use Adobe Premiere Elements or Windows Live Movie Maker.

Paper cutout figures - Esdar Maren

For my grade 9s ...

These are mixed media collages.

I love the way in which Maren duplicates parts of the image and flips them horizontally to create a bilaterally symmetrical image.

Some images have a background - others don't.

Research your own 'paper' cutout figures.
Think of:-

  • animated figures (Adobe Premiere Elements or Windows Movie Maker)
  • mixed media
  • encaustic (wax)
  • incorporate drawing; painting
  • other??

Sfiso kaMkame

Inside Out (PAT 3) Process work

For my Grade 11s and 12s .......

Adobe Youth Voices  Link to the website

Inside Out project (from Adobe Youth Voices)

Possible Steps: (I used this guideline in a very open-ended way at the beginning. It changed considerably as I progressed, as I'm a more intuitive, visual person. My images came first, and then the words, and only then the poem. I didn't worry at all about the quantities!)

       Write out:
• three talents or attributes young people possess e.g. joy / sisterhood / music / dance /
• three hopes you have for young people e.g. freedom / strength /
• three unexpected or unrealized qualities about young people e.g abuse / strikes / pain /

Organize the above nine items into a poem that represents the young people you know. This is a great opportunity to practice storyboarding: create a nine-square storyboard and draw in the images you would like to use to share your poem. (see Storyboard Handout)

With your digital camera, take (at least) nine still images that represent the ideas expressed in your poem (photos can be metaphorical, literal, photos of yourself, etc.). Take this as an opportunity to be creative! See Shot Composition handout for additional support taking photos.

Look at the rubric below to refresh your memory about our class discussion. We have to use the National rubric, as this is for your Exhibition assessment.
PAT3: LO1 is your PROCESS work. (aka. your sourcebook - digital or A3)

We will start the production and post-production on Monday 29th April. It doesn't matter what discipline you prefer - we start at the same time!
Deadline for the completed project is the SECOND week of Term 3 (22nd July 2013)
